HELLER CAPSTONE PROJECT
HOSPITALITY I SUSTAINABLE DESIGN I SCALABLE SOLUTIONS I COLLABORATION
Course: Capstone 2
During my final semester at Parsons, my Capstone class has the unique opportunity to work directly with Heller, a leading furniture brand known for its sustainable and design-forward solutions. As part of their brief, we’ve been tasked with integrating their furniture into premium hospitality and lounge spaces, while also focusing on sustainability as a key component. Our project goes beyond hospitality, as we are also developing experiences aimed at shifting Gen-Z’s perceptions of plastic. Through these diverse approaches, we aim to create eco-friendly, functional, and aesthetically impactful solutions that not only align with Heller’s commitment to sustainability but also resonate with both the hospitality industry and the evolving expectations of younger generations.

The concept is to partner with an existing airport lounge and temporarily replace its furniture with Heller’s sustainable designs, offering travelers a unique opportunity to experience eco-friendly luxury in a high-traffic environment. By addressing the question “How might we integrate Heller’s sustainable furniture into premium hospitality spaces?”, we’re not just enhancing the aesthetics and comfort of the lounge, but also showcasing Heller’s furniture as a practical, stylish, and durable choice for modern spaces.

Our idea for Art Basel is a pop-up installation showcasing Heller’s sustainable furniture in the heart of Miami’s vibrant Wynwood and Design District. This concept ties into the “How might we integrate Heller’s sustainable furniture into high-profile cultural events?” by aligning Heller with creativity and innovation. The installation will reflect Miami’s bold, artistic vibe, inviting visitors to interact with the furniture and learn about its sustainable design—turning the space into an immersive, engaging experience that highlights the fusion of art and sustainability.

The Picnic Hack is our solution to breaking plastic stereotypes, where we combine eco-friendly design with a fun, interactive picnic experience. By providing a sustainable setting that challenges preconceived notions of plastic, we address the “How might we smash plastic stereotypes without boring them with brochures or lectures?” With Heller’s stylish, sustainable furniture at the center, we create a playful, experiential environment that encourages guests to reconsider plastic’s value through comfort and real-life experience, making sustainability feel natural and aspirational.
